The Department of Public Safety and Police Services at Michigan Technological University is staffed by trained, certified state of Michigan police officers who have full law enforcement authority (including the power of arrest) throughout Houghton County. The department is staffed and operates twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week.

Lock your door
Lock your door whenever you leave your room or your car, regardless of the length of time you plan to be gone. A surprising number of thefts occur when you leave for only a few minutes.
Walk in lighted areas and avoid isolated locations
When you are on campus at night, only walk in lighted areas. If possible, walk with a friend and avoid taking shortcuts. The shortest route is not always the safest. Know the location of the campus emergency phones and if you have concerns about your safety or security, use the Public Safety escort service.
Do not leave latched doors open
Do not prop open latched or locked doors. If you find a door propped open, secure it.
Report thefts and safety concerns
If anything of yours is stolen, report the theft or unsafe circumstance to Public Safety and Police Services immediately.
Know the emergency phone locations

Have your keys ready
Have your keys ready to unlock your vehicle when you are walking to your car.
