Graduate Student Fall Orientation 2008
Please register on-line to attend orientation.
Orientation for new Summer and Fall 2008 students is planned for August 28th and 29th, 2008, beginning at 1:00pm in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Students will meet current graduate students at Michigan Tech, the staff of the Graduate School and members of the Michigan Tech community. The session on August 28th is highly recommended for graduate students. The event will begin with a few short presentations and will be followed by round table discussions where students can have all of their questions answered.
The session on August 29th is required. This session will begin at 1pm in the Memorial Union Ballroom and will cover the basics of academic integrity and responsible conduct for research. It will begin with short presentations and be followed by discussion of case studies.
Once Orientation is complete, students are encouraged to view the online modules.

Responsible Conduct for Research
All graduate students will be required to complete Responsible Conduct for Research (RCR) training in the near future. Graduate students entering in the spring are encouraged to complete this training during the Spring semester to comply with this new requirement. Students who do not complete the training may be prohibited from registering for Michigan Tech credits in future semesters.
To begin your training:
- Read Michigan Tech's misconduct policy.
- Visit the Responsible Conduct of Research page to read the logon instructions and link to the CITI Course in Responsible Conduct of Research. The resources on this page are also recommended reading.
- Create an account with the CITI course.
- Select the CITI course curriculum that is appropriate for your graduate program. Use the following guidance along with your advisor to determine the appropriate curriculum:
- Question 1
- Will you be conducting any research with human subjects? Note that this would include surveys of people along with physiological measurements (such as heart rate).
- YES: Select one of the first three radio buttons as appropriate to your project.
- NO: Select, "Students conducting no more than minimal risk research."
- Will you be conducting any research with human subjects? Note that this would include surveys of people along with physiological measurements (such as heart rate).
- Question 2: All students should select, "N/A. I have not completed the Basic Course for my learner group yet."
- Question 3
- The first option, "Good Clinical Practice and ICH" should be selected by students who may do research in affiliation with Portage Health.
- ALL STUDENTS should select one of the other four options most related to their field. Engineers not conducting biomedical research should select Physical Science.
- Question 4
- Students working with animals should select the first option for the "Working with the IACUC Course" AND the type of animals that they will be using. Note that the modules for fish, lizards, amphibians and reptiles are under construction at this time.
- All other students do not need to select any of these options.
- Question 1
- Complete the educational exercises prescribed by your curriculum. Note that the training does not need to be completed at one time. You can save your progress and return to the modules at a later time.
- Print your Completion Report and return it to the graduate school. Do not print and submit your grade book as evidence of completion.
