In 2009, the Innovative Castings (ICE) and Program in Integrated Sustainable Manufacturing (PrISM) Enterprises officially merged to create the Advanced Metalworks Enterprise (AME). The merger leveraged ICE’s strengths in metal casting with PrISM’s product development and manufacturing competencies. AME seeks to expand its foundry facilities to encompass a wider range of solidification processes including die casting, investment casting and continuous casting. Students model, fabricate and characterize metallic systems, such as aluminum, iron, zinc, titanium and nickel-based alloys.Ready to get your hands on high-impact metal-casting projects? Cast a wider net with the Advanced Metalworks Enterprise (AME). Work with high-quality metals and metallic components to fabricate patterns, molds, dies, and other specialized components for industry sponsors—all in our state-of-the-art casting and metallurgy labs. The Advanced Motor Sports (AMS) Enterprise oversees the work of Tech’s four vehicle competition Enterprise teams: Blizzard Baja, Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Formula SAE, and Supermileage Systems. The Aerospace Enterprise was established to provide hands-on aerospace education and experience to Michigan Tech undergraduate students. Its objective is to design and fly several Michigan Tech student-built spacecraft. In pursuit of this objective, emphasis will be placed on space mission design and analysis, vehicle integration, systems engineering, and comprehensive ground-testing and qualification. Currently the Aerospace Enterprise is assembling and testing the Oculus-ASR nanosatellite in conjunction with the Air Force Research Lab. Oculus-ASR advances space situational awareness by allowing ground-based observers the opportunity to anchor algorithms capable of determining spacecraft altitude using unresolved optical imagery. In 2012, the Enterprise participated in the University Nanosatellite Program competition and took first place, earning a launch position on a SpaceX Falcom Heavy in 2015..

Formed in 2002 as an evolution of the Michigan Tech AIChE Chem-E Car team, AEE provides opportunities for young professionals in multiple academic disciplines to research and develop alternative energy sources. Projects, research, and development are done in conjunction with industry sponsors to give viable solutions to real-world energy problems. Current projects include developing the former president's residence into a student occupied Sustainability Demonstration House and a biofuels project for a fast pyrolysis plant. AEE regularly maintains four projects and they are always evolving.

Prepare for a high-achieving career in technology as an undergraduate with the Blue Marble Security Enterprise. Blue Marble Security is a virtual company of undergraduate students focused on securing the future through thoughtful use of technology and has developed a culture that fosters high professional standards, creativity, productivity, and a burning desire to learn. This student-led company combines a rich educational experience in engineering design, team building, project management, and original product development. Some notable projects include an autonomous robot built to compete in the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, a simple heart rate monitor for education and community outreach, and a portable blood typing device. Additionally, the enterprise has two industry-sponsored projects involving metal fracture analysis and an employee resource scheduling database. The word “security” for BMS is defined by the provision of technological support to a nation‘s defense, corporate economy, and the personal well-being of all its people. BMS strives to improve an individual‘s safety, security, and health through the use of resourceful creativity. With this experience, BMS graduates are ready for the world‘s most challenging careers.
The BoardSport Technologies Enterprise (BST) strives to produce new, refined, and attractive boards by making them lighter, stronger, and with innovative materials. BST focuses on the engineering, design, and manufacturing of skis, snowboards, skateboards, longboards, wakeboards, and other products related to the board sports industry.

The Digital Mapping Enterprise (DME) aims to implement real-life geospatial mapping projects relying on the processing of aerial, satellite, and UAV imagery: LIDAR, Radar, IfSAR, and Hydrographic sonar data as well as GPS/GNSS, electronic instruments and surveying materials. More importantly, the mapping projects facilitate students’ deep understanding of various geospatial disciplines including photogrammetry, remote sensing, geodesy, image interpretation, digital cartography and GIS.

ETEC’s mission is to work with communities to implement energy-efficient designs into new and existing construction projects. MDOT sponsored a study to evaluate the performance of surface materials in railroad crossings. The team collected and analyzed data to come up with solutions based on the information available. Extensive research was done with other state transportation departments and literature sources to help find significant data on the subject. Our notable accomplishments include second place in the West Michigan Emerging Green Builders Design Competition in 2007, and partnering with New Power Tour and at-risk high school students to winterize area homes for low-income elderly residents.
General and Expedition Adventure Research (GEAR)
Team Description: The General and Expedition Adventure Research Enterprise (GEAR) was created to provide students an outlet to combine their technical knowledge and skills with their passion for the outdoors by collaborating with the outdoor recreation industry to develop new products and new processes. Launched in Fall 2014, GEAR's mission is to educate students in the fundamentals of product development for customer need through product and process design and testing, prototyping, supply chain management, marketing and distribution. The goal of the Green Campus Enterprise is to develop the analytical tools and knowledge necessary to support sustainability decision making and, in concert with other groups, design and implement projects to improve the sustainability of the Michigan Tech campus. The group is working closely with Michigan Tech’s administration to effectively engage the university community in reducing our carbon footprint. The Carbon Neutral AQIP project was initiated to improve the integration of sustainability into Michigan Tech’s research and education.

Humane Interface Design Enterprise (HIDE), provides students an opportunity to design, develop and evaluate interfaces to make daily work more efficient and easier to manage. Initially, the group is working on building a driver simulator and evaluating Chrysler's U-connect radio and display—a touch screen display found in current luxury model cars.

Our mission is to design and develop games for business, education, and fun. We work as an interdisciplinary, student-run Enterprise that fosters productivity, creativity, and effective business practices. Our members work in small teams of four to six people, exploring a wide variety of video game engines and platforms, including Windows, Android, Xbox, and an experimental Display Wall and three-dimensional motion-tracking system. The team competes in a local 24-hour game development challenge, the Houghton Game Jam, and recently co-hosted BonzAI Brawl, an AI coding competition. One of the group’s games, Arcane Brawlers, was recently released on Xbox Marketplace. Game on!

The goal of this Enterprise is to promote and learn about advanced hybrid vehicles in order to reduce fuel consumption and be more environmentally friendly. The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Enterprise is a three-year program to research, design, build, and test a state-of-the-art hybrid electric vehicle, based on a 1950 Chevrolet truck. Students work on projects such as designing and implementing power distribution, component mounting, and thermal management solutions. HEV Enterprise also incorporates Senior Design projects as well.
Innovative Global Solutions
The Innovative Global Solutions (IGS) Enterprise offers a unique opportunity for students to design and build systems and products for developing countries in need of them. Through working with other organizations on campus including the Pavlis Institute, the Peace Corps program, and International Senior Design, they will implement or introduce these solutions in the targeted developing countries. Beyond the implementation of these products and solutions the IGS Enterprise designs, the students will work with the School of Business and Economics to look for commercialization opportunities within the developing countries it assists. Currently, the IGS students are working on developing a second version of a low cost ventilator in cooperation with the engineering and medical staff at KNUST University in Kumasi and the Pavlis Institute.

The Open Source Hardware Enterprise aims to link high school, college and professional organizations through the development of open source hardware. The initial focus of the enterprise is to develop high value products (e.g. scientific equipment) from rapid prototyping and reuse of waste materials (e.g. glass, plastic and newspaper) but will expand into development of equipment to assist in local food production and open source appropriate technology for the global community. All designs will be open source and will be licensed in such a way as to ensure non-exclusivity.

However, none of these devices compare to the advanced robotic systems used in the Robotic Systems Enterprise (RSE). With projects ranging from a vision system that triangulates the location of a molten steel nozzle to an intelligent power management system that powers the Great Lakes Research weather buoys, RSE has projects that everyone can be interested in with real-world results.
Strategic Education through Naval Systems Experiences (SENSE)
The SENSE (Strategic Education through Naval Systems Experiences) Enterprise’s mission is to enable the workforce of tomorrow to redefine the boundaries for air, land, sea, and cyber supremacy through experiential learning and discovery. Students will design, build, and test engineering systems with a focus on Navy applications in all domains: space, air, land, sea, and undersea. Whether you’re into vehicle information and controls, robotics, or medical information solutions, the Wireless Communication Enterprise (WCE) has a project for you. The group specializes in a variety of wireless, optical, renewable-energy, and biomedical technologies—from embedding pacemaker data onto Smartphones to designing an autonomous robot utilizing GPS technology. WCE functions as a model of an engineering company with a variety of different project teams. Small teams allow students to be very involved in project work and give students the opportunity to gain technical skills, business presentation skills, and leadership experience. WCE offers a variety of projects involving wireless technologies, such as RFID and Bluetooth, as well as many other projects well suited for electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering students. Past projects include design of a mobile printing application, a GPS-guided robot, an arcade game, a mobile application for vehicle HVAC control, and design of a supplemental solar-power system for a school. WCE works as an entrepreneurial think tank, generating ideas that yield useful results for industry and consumers alike; new challenges from are always welcome!
