Assessment of Working, Living, and Learning

At Michigan Tech, we're committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive community. That’s why the University is conducting a campus-wide survey that looks at a variety of topics affecting our community. The approach is comprehensive—it uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods and includes every member of the campus community: students, faculty, and staff. The confidential assessment will address multiple aspects of your personal experiences working, living, and learning here.

Wednesday - Through friends I know from theater, I became involved with a project bringing 3-D printers to Kisumu, Kenya, for use at medical facilities. Our team made a 3-D printer that could be transported in a duffel bag across rough terrain—like riding on the back of a motorcycle or a tuk-tuk. We spent two months traveling around the country, contacting medical facilities to find out what we could do to help. Our project can help shortages in the supply chain—it isn’t expensive, and is a quicker way to get the specialized medical equipment people need. I’m originally from Wisconsin, but went to high school in the Keweenaw. I came to Michigan Tech because it was close to home and I got scholarships. I’m a scientific and technical communications major. It was a bit of a journey finding STC—I changed my initial major and was undecided for a while. I was never in theater before Michigan Tech. I’ve been involved with acting for a few years now and have even taken classes. I just finished performing in the play “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” and am preparing for the next one—“Fires in the Mirror.” I work at the Multiliteracies Center and am also involved with the Sailing Club and the STC student organization on campus. I like Michigan Tech because there is a balance between being in a humanities major and being at a technically focused college. I’m glad to be at a school where I’m surrounded by cutting-edge science and technology. #mtuhumans
