Saturday - I attended the Women in Engineering program in high school. That’s how I got involved in Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs. This was my first year being a counselor. We are the people kids go to if they need anything. We even pick students up from the airport when they fly in. Being an SYP counselor means doing what needs to be done. And it’s pretty hectic—you live from nap to nap. Meeting the future of engineering was the best part about this experience. The girls who come to camp are impressive. They are athletes, musicians, artists, and from diverse cultures. It’s awesome—there are people from every walk of life interested in STEM. Michigan Tech was the only college I ever considered. My mother graduated from Tech in ‘93. I started looking into WIE because I wanted to experience campus, and at the time I wanted to become an engineer. I started in materials science, but have since switched to scientific and technical communication. It’s not that I didn't like engineering, but because I missed English and writing. I still enjoy science and math, but I’ve always wanted to write. SYP was and is a fantastic experience—on both sides. Being a camper and being a counselor. I enjoyed meeting new people and becoming friends with the staff. We didn’t always get a chance to hang out, but we had experiences that brought us closer together.
